A green salamander in Lauzerte? A rare encounter at Domaine de la Salamandre

Observing a salamander in its natural habitat is already a rare moment. But discovering a marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus ) in a damp gravel pit is almost exceptional.

Yet that's precisely what we were fortunate enough to witness recently at the Domaine de la Salamandre in Lauzerte, Tarn-et-Garonne. A surprising encounter that perfectly illustrates the richness of local biodiversity… and the magic of moments spent in the heart of nature.

The marbled newt is a fairly common species in Occitanie even though it is a strictly protected species in France (annex II and IV of the Habitats Directive) and its populations are declining everywhere.

It leads a discreet, mainly nocturnal life and spends most of the year hidden under stones, tree stumps, or in vegetation. It only frequents water for a few months a year (February to June).

At Domaine de la Salamandre, these natural conditions are met:

  • shaded areas
  • natural pond
  • preserved environment

👉 All these factors contribute to its presence.

A valuable indicator of biodiversity

The presence of salamanders and newts is an excellent ecological sign.

These amphibians are particularly sensitive:

  • to pollution
  • to intensive agriculture
  • to the degradation of their habitat (drying up of ponds and wetlands)

👉 Their presence on the property therefore indicates a healthy and balanced environment.

A unique nature experience in Lauzerte

Staying at Domaine de la Salamandre is not just about sleeping in a cottage or a room.

It's about experiencing immersion:

  • observe the wildlife (deer, wild boar, badgers…)
  • listen to the sounds of nature, and especially the songs of birds
  • slow down the pace
  • enjoy a preserved environment
